Zero Carb and Ketones – Why They Don’t Matter

ketone chartBy – Dana

High ketones are a sign of inefficient fat burning. If you have high ketone readings or if you can easily produce high ketone readings, you are not 100% fat adapted.  Of course, if you are on a Zero Carb diet, you are in ketosis all the time, but our ketone levels become stable, just like our blood sugar levels.

The science on this is very new and very misunderstood. Dr Phinney has done the most research on it, but even he is misunderstanding. He thinks elevated ketones, in a target range, are a great thing and we should strive to be in “nutritional ketosis”. I wish he would try Zero Carb, so he can see what happens when people eat the human optimal diet, meat, with no restrictions or counting macros.

Limiting Protein?! (Here we go again)

Ribeye steaksBy – Charles Washington

The issue that just won’t go away, “too much protein” has taken another turn because a more visible person has adopted the theory. ZIOH (and ZCH) has been pretty clear about our position but Dr. Paul Mabry has invected some new arguments in a recent blog post. Because this is such a divisive issue within ZC communities, it’s important to define and sharpen our definition in the face of competing ideas. There are many things that appear close to ZC but are not the definite article. Hopefully, this post will set this aright for you and as always you’re free to make up your own mind.

One of the most common questions we get in our Facebook group is “What about your cholesterol?!”  So many doctors are behind the times and still don’t understand cholesterol and lipid profiles.  High total cholesterol means nothing and is not an indication of anything.  It is the triglyceride number of your cholesterol panel that is the most important.  High triglycerides is an indication of heart disease and metabolic syndrome.

Fasting and Zero Carb

FastingBy – Dana Spencer

Zero Carb Health does not advocate Fasting or IF (intermittent fasting) on a Zero Carb Diet.  Fasting is beneficial if you are eating a diet that contains carbohydrates.  The reason fasting is beneficial is because of the absence of damaging, inflammatory carbohydrates in the body, not the lack of food.

Sugar damages our bodies in many ways.  There is no benefit of eating sugar, so eliminating sugar is a huge relief to our bodies.  You can read all about the why and how sugar is so damaging in this article by Gary Taubes.
