Gary Taubes – “The Case Against Sugar”, lecture videos

The case against sugarGary Taubes has a new book out – The Case Against Sugar.  I found links to 3 video lectures by Gary Taubes on dietdoctor.com.

The Sugar Wars – review

Those of us in our search of better health have learned how damaging and addictive sugar is, but it’s not just sugar, it’s really, the taste of sweet, that’s addicting.  People, and doctors, think replacing sugar, with artificial sweeteners or other natural sweeteners like, honey, agave, or stevia is better or healthier.

Zero Carb Diet and Alcohol

Wine SpritzerBy, 10+ year ZeroCarb veteran

When faced with the major upcoming holidays or occasions, where alcohol will no doubt be frequently offered…… Will you, won’t you? What to do? And if you do, what to expect…so that you don’t make the mistake of thinking that those drinks are no big deal or won’t affect your weight or any other progress your body is starting to make on a Zero Carb diet.

Yes, alcohol is one of those things which some ZC’ers do partake in, now and then. This isn’t a post telling you NOT to have it, if you choose to do so. Instead, it is an attempt to help lend some insight into how to perhaps then change your expectations about your own body and what the effects of alcohol upon it may be, if you do choose to imbibe:

Zero Carb Veterans

Zero Carb VeteransSome of our veterans of Zero Carb:

Many of these people have been eating a zero carb (animal foods) diet for more than 5 years.  Some of them are active on the Zero Carb Health Facebook group, some are not as active, or may not even currently be members.  Please do not inundate any of these members with private questions unless they initiate such a conversation.  This list is posted only after several requests for help with recognizing the names of Zero Carb veterans.

These people may not all be in perfect health, but they have improved their health by sticking to zero carb eating for a period of many years.  Also, lots of us have met each other over the years, and can vouch for them being more than just a profile pic on FB.

If you would like your name removed from the list, please let us know.  If you feel you were mistakenly left off the list, also let us know.

The Human Natural Diet and the Evolution of the Zero Carb Diet. Part 3

Atkins The Human Natural Diet and the Evolution of the Zero Carb Diet. (Part 3)

(Part 1), (Part 2), (Part 4), (Part 5)

By Dana

After my “Natural Paleo” diet failure, I was desperate to find any diet, natural or not, that would work to help me lose weight.  I wanted something I could eat for life, not some one week cabbage soup diet that works great, for 1 week only, then gain it all back and then some the next week.   In my search for a diet I came across a website called Fatsecret.  Fat secret had a pie chart of diets and their success rates based on members reporting.  Atkins was winning by a landslide. (I just logged into my old fatsecret account and they no longer have this pie chart.)

The Human Natural Diet and the Evolution of the Zero Carb Diet.

(Part 2), (Part 3)

By Dana

“Hello all,

I have been eating the natural human dietary regime for over 47 years now. I do not eat anything whatsoever from vegetable sources. The only things veggie I use are spices. My diet is usually 60% fat and 40% protein by calories. I used to eat 80/20 when younger and about twice as much quantity of meat also, but that seems too much energy at my age, which is 71- even though I am very active. I think the body actually becomes more efficient with energy as you age, but I have no way of proving it true. Otherwise, my body today is very like it was at the age of 30. I figure most of what we call ‘aging’ is due to insulin damage to the collagen and other body structures. No carbs = no insulin. I don’t heal quite as fast when injured as I did as a youngster, however. But I have few wrinkles, and my skin is still strong and elastic.”  – Owsley Stanley, AKA – The Bear

Fasting and Zero Carb

FastingBy – Dana Spencer

Zero Carb Health does not advocate Fasting or IF (intermittent fasting) on a Zero Carb Diet.  Fasting is beneficial if you are eating a diet that contains carbohydrates.  The reason fasting is beneficial is because of the absence of damaging, inflammatory carbohydrates in the body, not the lack of food.

Sugar damages our bodies in many ways.  There is no benefit of eating sugar, so eliminating sugar is a huge relief to our bodies.  You can read all about the why and how sugar is so damaging in this article by Gary Taubes.

Too Much Protein?

Too much proteinBy – Stephen Visio Ewen

In reference to the Zero Carb Health, Diabetes Discussion.

Buried in the replies section of comments to a post was a fascinating conversation that deserves to be curated. Content curation is a powerful social media technique that really helps clarify all the information presented by so many different people.

THE ISSUE
Some commenters warned about too much protein and some warned that there is no such thing as too much protein. To me both are right depending upon the amount of damage or adaption to a disordered metabolism a person is dealing with. I think this curated information belongs in the diabetes thread. So I took it upon myself to curate the info and add it to this thread. Read More

What Fruit Does to our Immune System

trickandtreatOne of my favorite books on low carb eating is Barry Groves book, Trick and Treat.  After reading the chapter “Why Five Portions?”, I realized just how dangerous sugar was.

This chapter is about why and how the daily recommendation of fruits and vegetables became 5 portions.  But, to me, the most profound section in this chapter was the one on how sugars, especially fructose, depress our immune systems and disable our white blood cells ability to destroy bacteria and illness causing organisms.

Pork Rinds

If the 30 day meat and water challenge existed when I started a Zero Carb diet, 10 years ago, I wouldn’t still be eating Zero Carb.  I would not have made it 30 days.

The thought of just plain meat and water was repulsive to me. I was a foodie and a gourmet cook! I loved flavor, texture, color and variety! Read More
