The first post here authored by me! 🙂
Recently, a few people mentioned they eat 5-6 small meals all day because they think it keeps your metabolism going.
This was my biggest diet failure of all time! Prior to my Zero Carb diet, I fell for this approach and managed to gain 50lbs. (So much for keeping my metabolism going.) I was tired all the time and got fatter! Knowing what I know now, about metabolism, and more importantly Insulin, I believe eating small meals every few hours is dangerous and damaging to our metabolism and immune system. There is no easy way to explain this to the person who believes they are eating correctly, so I went looking for information that was clear, easy to read and understand.
I found this great blog post that explains the most important reasons why eating all day long is bad.
- Increased hunger
- Increased Insulin
- Insulin resistance
- Fat storage
- Slowed metabolism
- Loss of energy
Besides sabotaging weight loss efforts, eating 5 small meals also compromises your immune system. No wonder people are sick all the time. In Trick and Treat, by Barry Groves (my favorite book on carbohydrate restriction) There is a chapter about how foods, affect our immune system. The higher the carbohydrate the more your immunity is compromised. Ironically, Orange Juice is one of the worst things for your immunity. A sample of this study can be found here.
So, if you are eating 5 small meals with carbohydrates in them, all day long, you may not be gaining weight, but your immunity is being compromised, all day long.
